This week the group has requested we discuss the Preface, particularly the sections “What it is,” and What it says.” We request that you read the Preface before the class tonight, if you can. It is only six pages long.

The Course is a teaching device. Its purpose is to give us the tools we need to change our perception, our thinking, and see and think in line with Spirit. It will not tell us what to think or what we see and perceive. It will teach us the tools we can use, if we choose, to access Divine vision and thinking which we already have access to within our own being. We have just lost contact with that Divine within. The Course teaches us how to let Spirit guide us on our journey to the resource already within each of us. It teaches us the tools we can use to rediscover our True Self and our connection with the One who created us ad still sees us as we were created and as we still are.

We need not understand every little thing in the Course. Some tools and techniques and tools will resonate within us while others may be difficult and perplexing. One of the deepest lessons we can learn from the Course is that we are never alone. We need never deal with anything facing us without assistance and guidance. All we ever need do is ask for guidance no matter what the appearance of any situation in which we find ourselves. The lessons and tools of the Course, when applied, will lead us out of confusion and loneliness into peace, love, joy, and happiness. Isn’t that what we are really seeking?

The Text, the first book of the Course, is the theory and the explanation of the changes we need to make. The Workbook for Students, the second book, is comprised of 365 lessons designed to be done one each day for a year, though one need not keep that schedule. This is the practical application of the Course concepts and Principles. The lessons teach us how, step by step, to deconstruct the way we have learned to think and perceive, and learn new ways to think and perceive from the Divine within us we have lost touch with. It teaches us how to rely on the teacher within us for the guidance we need. The Manual for Teachers, the third book, looks at the same lessons and principles from another perspective in a Q&A format ad clarifies some of the terms used in the Course.

All together the Course offers a life changing experience if we are willing to do what it asks. We may find the going tough at times. We may find some of the tools too far fetched for us. The Course doesn’t ask us to swallow everything. It asks us to be open to

ACIM T-1.I Principles of Miracles

abstract background withe sea sunriseJuly 10, 2012

Last week we finished reading the Text of the Course. What a beautiful passage it is. Every moment, every encounter, every experience, every relationship, and even every thought is an opportunity to reconnect with the awareness of who we really are, our Divine Self. We remain who we have always been, we just remember who we have always been and always will be. What a comfort and joy this is. We need never be out of awareness unless we forget to remember who we really are. And the appearance of the world is transformed by our awareness. It is amazing how the same happening, occurrence, or event can be perceived so many different ways depending on our state of being, our awareness.

As we go back to the beginning of the text, the Course tells us it is all about love, recognizing love, experiencing love, sharing and extending love, and realizing there is nothing except love. Our lessons in this life are about removing our own blocks to the awareness of Love in our lives. We all have love. Love is at the core of our being, it is our natural state of mind. And since love is all-encompassing, it can have no opposite, cannot be taken away, and cannot be destroyed. Love is real and all that is not love is not real.

The Course puts it this way:

“Nothing real (Love) can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”

We will begin reflecting on the principles of miracles as put forward in the Course. All miracles are founded in Love, for they each lead to the awareness of Love within us. Peace of mind is the result of the awareness of Love within. All miracles, whatever form they may take, lead to the awareness of love. We need only let go of our blocks and barriers of thought and allow Sprit to show us the miracles around us every moment of every day. Come join us on Tuesday evenings to join in this discovery. Bring a friend and embark on this journey without distance. You will experience the Love that you really are and encounter the peace of God within you.

ACIM T-31.VIII Choose Once Again

abstract background withe sea sunriseJuly 3, 2012

We are reading and discussing the final paragraphs of the text this week. This final section has reminded us again of all that is offered us. We are always offered a choice, and when we choose incorrectly we always have an opportunity to choose again. There is no scolding, no punishment, no penalty, no guilt, and no penance. There is just the opportunity to choose again. Spirit walks with us whether or not we recognize it. Spirit calls to us gently waiting for us to recognize that call from within us that beckons to us, the ancient song of wholeness within that is always within. This is the truth of who we really are.

We can be glad we have the world to walk in and experience so deeply. For every situation, every thing that happens, and every one we encounter is an opportunity to perceive each situation anew where God’s gift can be recognized as ours! There is always a way to see any situation differently. And Spirit is there within us waiting to help us see correctly with the eyes of Spirit if we will just be willing to choose to see again differently. No matter how we see the world at this moment there is always another higher way to perceive the world again. The real world is all around us waiting to be seen through the eyes of Spirit within. The lawns of Heaven are spread out before us in all their luxurious glory waiting to be seen.

Reach out and take the hand of the holy one you have encountered today. As they see their holiness in your eyes you will see your holiness reflected in their eyes. It is always our choice how we see. What we see is neutral and is neither right nor wrong. But how we see what we see makes all the difference in the world that we could ever imagine. And how we see is our choice. Look for the Divine in all you see. Consciously make the choice to look for the Divine in all you see. And ask for guidance from the Divine when you have trouble seeing the Divine in all you see this world. The world is given us to guide us back to the awareness of the Divine Oneness we really are.

Come join us this week as we celebrate our Oneness. Consciously be in the presence of our Divines Source. We have chosen to walk this journey that may appear to be long ad winding, but is really without any distance whatsoever. For, we never left home. We simply chose not to recognize home. Come be with us. And be the Divine whoness you really are.

ACIM T-31.VIII Choose Once Again

abstract background withe sea sunriseJune 26, 2012

The one temptation the world would teach us is to persuade us to believe we are the body and all that means to us. This temptation occurs in many forms, as many as we can possibly think up. But it always asks us to believe our identity is defined by our body and all we believe about it. Temptation is always about the belief that we are separate, limited, weak, defenseless, lacking, and under attack. It is the basis for all we think about ourselves, and all we identify with in our minds. It is our self concept which we have spent a lifetime making up and reinforcing with our ideas, thoughts, and beliefs.

Would you continue this idea of existence if Spirit in all its glory asked you to choose once again if you are to take your place among the saviors of the world or remain in hell and hold each othercaptive there? Every temptation is a choice. It makes no difference how often we have chosen the hell of separation. Every conscious thought identified with the self concept aligned with separation is an offer from Spirit to each of us to make a different choice. We always have the choice between a self concept of limitation symbolized by the body and the reality of who we really are. Spirit is always within us waiting for us to ask for guidance in this decision. Whatever form the choice may take Spirit is there to guide us if we only make the choice to be willing and ask for guidance.

The choice is always s there within us. It is always the choice between our own weakness and the strength of the Christ within us. We misperceive the self concept we hold of ourselves as our own strength, when it is really weakness. We don’t recognize our self concept as weakness simply because we refuse to look for the strength of Spirit and Oneness within us. That strength is there and always has been. When we choose to look to that inner strength we recognize its reality and remember the reality of who we really are. We recognize it in each other and see it also within ourselves.

It is time to start making that choice. And if we drop away from it, we make the choice again. There will never be a time when we can’t make the choice of Oneness. But the sooner we do, the sooner we find the real world in this life. Sprit transforms correct our vision of what we see and we find ourselves in the peace, love, and joy of Heaven.   We may drop back into the separation that feels like hell, but we remember we always have the choice to see again through the eyes of the Christ within. The Christ within is our true power. Make that choice again and again. Heaven awaits.

ACIM T-31.VII The Savior’s Vision

abstract background withe sea sunriseJune 19, 2012

We have been talking abut the concept of the self we hold and believe so strongly and use as our “identity” to establish a sense of self worth for ourselves. There is nothing wrong with any of this except that we have made this self concept in isolation from Spirit and the truth about who we really are. We have learned this self concept and become so attached to it we established our self worth on this concept made in isolation. The result is that we have blocked ourselves from the awareness of the reality of who we really are. Our self concept becomes a barrier, a veil, a thick soupy fog, that essentially blocks our eyes and minds from the eyes of Spirit we all have.

We are so attached to this self made self concept that we are very unwilling to let it go and let our spiritual vision take hold. We have taught ourselves to fear what we might see if we let go of that idea we hold so dear. So God has given us each other in this world we think we see. We are asked to be willing to see another, whomever we are with at any given moment, as the creation of God they really are. We are asked to be willing to entertain the thought that they may be whole, innocent and divine as they are created. In the moment of that thought, we see our true self reflected back to us, a reality we could never see in isolation without the help of Spirit’s vision.

That flash of vision, that glimpse of reality, opens our eyes to the vast peace and love within us that extends to all of creation. Granted, this is the first flash. We still have much to learn, or better yet unlearn, about how we think. This is the role God has entrusted to us. God entrusts each holy one we encounter to us to grant forgiveness and salvation, seeing the Truth about them. Once we make this shift in our mind the real world opens to our sight. We have dropped the veil of our self concept from our eyes and see the peace, love, and light of God shining forth from each other and thus from ourselves. We feel the connectedness of all creation. And we feel that communion of Oneness extend beyond ourselves and the ends of the earth to the limitlessness of the universe. What joy we feel as we let this new awareness of our true identity rise in our minds. God has held this for us, waiting for us to just be willing to ask. Let it be so.

ACIM T-31.VII The Savior’s Vision

abstract background withe sea sunriseJune 12, 2012

We understand the concept of learning. We have used it all our lives to help us grow and understand ourselves and the world around us. Learning is a process, and so learning is the process Salvation uses to help us change the self concept we hold and believe about ourselves. Learning is the process of changing our thinking. But we are reluctant to change the self concept we hold about ourselves wholly to the Truth in one fell swoop. So Spirit works with us step by step to build a new self concept of ourselves in steps we can sanely manage. And since we are so resistant and reluctant to think we could have made a mistake in who we think we are, Spirit asks us to start by change our opinion of another first.

As each one comes into our livesl we have the opportunity to let it dawn on our sight that this one is wholly worthy of forgiveness. In this dawning are we able to see our concept of ourselves wholly changed. When we allow our thinking about another to change, our thinking about ourselves will change in a like manner. Believe it or not, it is much easier to change our opinion about another than it is to change our opinion about ourselves. So Spirit uses our brother or sister, those who we are in relationship with in any form at the moment, to work salvation in our mind. Realize that the body has no need of salvation. Only our minds, for our minds are where our mistaken ideas are held dear.

In this plan of salvation, we give our trust to the good in another and so we give it also to the good in ourselves. In terms of concepts, we begin to see each other as more than just a body, and thus ourselves as more than just a body. By focusing on the good in another, the body grows decreasingly persistent in our sight, and over time will cease to be more than a shadow encircling the good we see. This will become our concept of ourselves when we have reached the world beyond the one our body’s eyes alone can see. Then we will be willing to not interpret what we see and experience without the Aid that God has given us. In this sight there is another world.

Take this first step and let it be so.

ACIM T-31.VI Recognizing the Spirit

abstract background withe sea sunriseJune 5, 2012

This section of the Course opens with the statement, “You see the flesh or recognize the spirit.” This is another one of the Course’s statements where it’s either one or the other. We can’t see both at the same time. Our vision is dependent on this choice we make. And our choice is dependent on what we believe about ourselves and who we think we are.   The belief we are this body of flesh will always keep us from recognizing spirit within us, \for they are opposites. Our mind cannot be in both beliefs at the same time. If we believe we are flesh, bodies, we believe we are separate. Sprit is Oneness and unity, so if we recognize spirit within, which is One, we cannot be separate. Our minds cannot accept and rationalize two opposing believed truths at the same time. So, we will see ourselves as we believe ourselves to be.

Salvation is undoing. It is the undoing of the limited seeing we have believed so accurate and real. Salvation releases us from the mistake of our belief we are the body and the world we see. But salvation does not ask us to behold the spirit and not perceive the body. That would be almost impossible for our minds which have so long believed we are the body we see. It asks us only to make the choice of which we want to believe and to choose to want to recognize spirit within.

We do not understand haw to see a world apart from the world we think we see. Our mind alone cannot see what it hasn’t made up. This world we made up, salvation will undo and let us see a world our body’s eyes could never see. We have been so entrenched in separation that this world we made up is all we can see. How is the world we see transformed? How is this salvation done? There is no doing to be done. There is no learning or any effort that needs to be done. It just already is for it is our will and God’s Will and it is so.

It doesn’t matter where we think we are, on earth or in Heaven. The Truth of who we are within us remains always radiant and beautiful as a star. That essence of our true being can never be diminished or lost. Our true spirit forever radiates within us, full of love, peace, and joy, waiting for us to recognize it within us. We need do nothing but be willing to choose to believe this truth. The transformation follows our willingness to let go of our attachment to what we think our body’s eyes see. Forget looking for a checklist, the steps we must achieve, and the learning we must do to achieve what we already are. Recognize it by allowing Sprit to remind us who we really are. We are already where we want to be. We just don’t recognize it because we are misperceiving it. Let it all go and recognize sprit.

ACIM T-31.V Self-Concept versus Self

abstract background withe sea sunriseMay 29, 2012

Every concept we hold is made up of thought. We make the mistake of thinking that thought is truth, even though a thought can be changed. Truth, by nature, is entirely unchangeable. Therefore, we cannot rationalize, deduce, or think Truth. We’ve spent a lifetime building our self-concept or self identity. We think it defines who we are. We think it gives us purpose. We think it gives us value. Each thought and idea we have about ourselves is weighed, tested, and judged as to whether or not it contributes to our idea of who we are. Thus, it does or does not become part of our self identity.

The concept we do need to get is not the content of our thoughts, our thinking and whether or not it is right and correct. The concept we need to get is the concept that we think, period. It is also important to realize that what we tend to think with is the mind of the ego, the separated mind. This is the mind that hangs onto the idea that we each are a body and that our mind and identity are contained within that body. Lf to our own devices rooted in this idea of separation, we see ourselves limited and falling short of our ideals. So we change our self identity to conform to those perceived limitations. We change our mind, the content of our thinking. The result is another set of separated ideas, perhaps refined to make us feel more worthwhile, but still changing and changeable ideas and thoughts.

All of this learning has brought us to the way we currently think and thus make up the self-concept and identity we believe about ourselves. It is difficult to see another way than the one we have become so accustomed to. Thankfully we have been given the Holy Spirit who has always been with us. Sprit holds us within the Mind of God, holding the memory of who we really are with our true self. Our true identity has never been apart from us, we have merely been thinking apart form who we really are and the Mind of God which is also our true mind.

Spirit gently guides us, when we ask, in our thinking. Step by step, Spirit gently guides our thinking process closer and closer to the Mind of God forever connected with Truth. As we walk hand in hand, or thought in thought, with Sprit, we find our self-concept, our identity shifting to become more and more in line with the Truth about who we really are. In this way, all the learning we made up as we built our concept of self is used for the purpose of learning bit by bit who we really are. Nothing of what we have made up, thought and believed is evil, damaging, or sinful in any way. It is all neutral, being used by Spirit for a holy purpose, to return us to the awareness of who we really are. Take this small step. Be just a little willing to reach to Spirit for guidance. It is all there within us, not limited by any of the limitations we have so believed in. Take that step.

ACIM T-31.V Self-Concept versus Self

abstract background withe sea sunriseMay 22, 2012

Concepts are learned. They are not based in Truth and therefore have no substance in reality. They (concepts) are solely of the world. So it is with self concepts, or concepts of self. The self concept we have of our self is made up of thoughts we have made up about who we think we are, or perhaps who we want to be. But, this concept is based in the world of form, designed to give meaning to who we are in this world we seem to be stuck in. As we move along our path in this world, this concept of self is continually changing, ever adjusting to new experiences and new thoughts and ideas. Our idea of who we are is fluid, continuously changing according to our thoughts and maintaining a “meaning” for us as we navigate the world.

This is the identity we have made for ourselves in an attempt to give meaning to our existence in this world. However, we have learned that truth and reality are unchanging. Truth and reality cannot be threatened or altered or made into something less than they are. We have simply lost sight of who we really are as we were created by God. So we did our best without benefit of the vast knowledge within us in making up a self concept to give meaning to who we are in a world that has no meaning.

God has provided us with a plan, a method to bring us back to the awareness of who we really are. The Holy Spirit is the friend and teacher God has planted deep within us. And Spirit patiently waits for us to be willing to make the shift in our perception to return our awareness of who we really are to our consciousness. To make the shift all at once would perhaps be too much for us, so Spirit takes us by the hand, step by step, unlearning each of the thoughts and ideas that are not true and helps us see our misperception a little at a time. As we remove each of there mistaken ideas, we begin to see more and more of the truth about who we really are, and who each and every one of us really are.

We begin to recognize the Mind of God within us and recognize our unity and Oneness. We begin to see how our thoughts and ideas we were so attached to are not real and are colored by our perception and the distorting lens we have been trying to see through. With the guidance of Spirit we begin the process of unlearning, similar to the process of learning which we did so well, that gently returns us to the awareness of our true Identity. That Identity has never left us, but we did lose sight of it for awhile. Now, if we choose to allow, Spirit will gently guide our decisions to bring us more and more fully into the awareness of who we really are. We moved into separation and self concept by making decisions in isolation. Now we move into Oneness by choking to make decisions with the guidance of Sprit with each step we now take. Choose to let it be so.

ACIM T-31.V Self-Concept versus Self

abstract background withe sea sunriseMay 15, 2012

From the moment we are born into this world, we are building a sense of self for ourselves. We are creating an identity for ourselves that we use to define who we are in this world. We don’t really know how to do this, so we make it up as we go. We emulate our parents, our teachers, our ministers, our older siblings, and our friends. We watch those who attract us in life, on television, and in the movies we watch. We interpret this barrage of input we deluge ourselves with and try to apply part or even all of it to ourselves. Is it any wonder we are confused about who we are?

We learn to be systematic about making this concept of self we hold of ourselves. We first make up the concept of self we want to be. We make up our innocence and reinforce all the good things we want to be. We make ourselves loving, kind gentle, generous, and all the other things we want to be. But we also make up a self that lies beneath this fragile concept of self. This other sense of self is meant to defeat and corrupt the self of innocence we have made for our identity. And so the world seems to be against us as our brother or sister seems to be against us, tearing down and apart the fragile innocent concept of self we made up.

This is what we learn in this world – to make up a self that points us away form the True Child of God we really are. As we – on our own – attempt to mold and create this concept of self we so want, we become more and more attached to the mistaken thoughts we made up about who we are. We develop the belief that these mistaken thoughts are real. And so we move down the path toward separation, turning away from what is already within us.

The knowledge of our true Self is already within us. It was there at our creation. It remains at our birth even as we lose sight of it. It remains with us through our journey in this world quietly reminding us of who we really are. It remains within us at our body’s death. And it forever is who we really are. We strive so diligently to make that mistaken self concept that we miss all the beauty of the One Self we are in unity with God and all creation. This One Self has no threats or dangers. It is all powerful and cannot really be challenged, lost, or defeated. It has such tremendous strength in its quiet state of being that nothing can threaten it. Our true Self is in the state of being we already are. Take a moment and let that state of being wash over your mind and awaken to the Self you really are.
